Weekly Photo Challenge – Resolved

Winter Cattails by Cathy Ulrich

Winter Cattails by Cathy Ulrich

This week’s challenge is the word “Resolved.” So I resolve to bring my camera with me whenever possible. I took this shot on my walk on Cathy Fromme Prairie in Fort Collins, Colorado. These cattails grow in a low lying wetlands area on the prairie and I’ve always wanted to photograph them, but I never seem to have my camera with me when I’m out there. With my new resolution, I did have my camera. This shot was taken with my new (Christmas gift to myself) Nikon D600 using a Nikkor FX 50mm, F1.8 Lens. I’d love to hear your thoughts!

  1. I’ve never seen those before–they look so puffy and cute. Happy New Year, Cathy!!!

Thanks, Weebs. You may have seen them and not realized it. They’re found throughout the U.S., including the East Coast. If you take a look at the ones in the middle ground, they’re darker brown and kindof shaped like a hot dog. Those are more the common form that people are used to seeing. In the winter, they produce this fluff that makes them look quite different than in the summer. Happy New Year to you, Weebs!!!

  2. Wow, that is breathtakingly beautiful. You have quite the eye!

This is an awesome photo and the backdrop is beautiful. I tried to pick a cattail once. It was very difficult. :)

beautiful perspective. Love the close up of the cattails and the mountains in the background are a great backdrop.

  5. Becky says:

I love this photograph! Great job!

  6. Nice shot. It looks very crisp, and the cattails, soft. It’s a nice contrast. We have these near my house. My kids love to throw all the fluffy stuff everywhere. It’s quite fun!

Thanks, Amy. Yes, there’s still a lot of snow on the ground here. It was a really nice morning – around 40 degrees F. And I just love this stand of cattails in the middle of the prairie. Did you ever walk out on the bike path on Cathy Fromme Prairie when you lived here?

      • Yes, it sounds familiar. I know I have been to Cathy Fromme before. It looks gorgeous!

      • Cathy Ulrich says:

It really is…my favorite place to go running. It’s a very pretty tract of land south and west of town. And we live just above it in the first line of foothills. And probably since you lived here, the city has connected this trail to the Spring Creek trail which goes all the way through town.

      • Nice! I know Fort Collins has grown a lot since I lived there. It’s nice to have a place like that so close by.

  7. Sydney Fong says:

Great shot , Cathy! Blue sky contrast with the pointed cattails!
I hope you’ll be the winner!

  8. Bruce Ruston says:

Very nice shot, I like the contrast too

  9. Well that is gorgeous, of course. But how are all the kitties getting by without them, I wonder? :P

  10. Brigitte says:

Your beautiful pic has some of my favorite colors – blues, tan, cream and some gray undertones. I always marvel at how the same sky, even when it’s blue, can feel like a winter (cold) or summer (warm) — isn’t that cool? Love it Cathy.

    • Cathy Ulrich says:

I love the colors in this pic too, Brig. And I know, it’s so interesting how the sky is such an indicator of the season. If I were to get all scientific and stuff, I suspect that it is somewhat a different color in winter than in summer. Maybe some kind of light shift due to the position of the sun in the sky? Thanks so much, Brigitte!

  11. I think you’re an excellent gift giver. Oh yeah, lovely photo, too.

What a fantastic gift to yourself! The picture is wonderful as always! I gave myself a lot of Batman stuff :P
