Weekly Photo Challenge – Let there be light!

New Mexico Light

New Mexico Light

Windows are one of my favorite sources for light. Photographing indoors with soft sidelight from a window creates lovely shadows and soft contours, especially for portraits. Here is a shot taken in Taos, New Mexico of the glass brick window in our casita during our stay there this past summer.

  2. This one is almost surreal! It looks like an ad for some spiritual, spa-like, something… really cool!

  6. Ooh, neato. You could use that as some sort of logo, or maybe to start a new religion or something. :-)

I too like using windows for lighting, especially for portraits. This window is very impressive, and you’ve turned it into a very special picture. I enjoy it thoroughly. A beautiful post, Cathy.

Thank you for your kinds words, Shimon! We stayed in this casita (little house) for four nights and I finally captured it when the light was just right (in my opinion). There’s a skylight right above it and the light had be good to get this glowing effect.

  14. If you did not say these windows were windows, Cathy, I would have thought they were some sort of mural. You do impressive things with light.

Thanks, V! There was a skylight in the room right above this window which helped to create the effect. Did you have a nice Thanksgiving? I wasn’t sure whether you went to San Francisco for this holiday or whether you’re going at Christmas.

      • Ah! So it was a somewhat natural special effect your eagle eye spotted. I was in a prolonged food coma in the hinterlands of New Jersey, so yes, I had a very nice Thanksgiving. I hope you did, too.

Oh yes, those hinterlands east of the Hudson River you Manhantanites so eschew! Yes, we had a very nice Thanksgiving – went to a friend’s house and ate a large meal, but the good news? No leftovers. I’ve been trying to shed a few pounds prior to a scuba trip later this month, but the good news is, I didn’t gain any weight…

      • Martini Max and I paced ourselves this year at the appetizer table, neither of us had seconds and for dessert, I only ate a single home made cookie and a shot of Amaretto. I’m consciously trying to avoid weight gain, too, but the spin bike is all set and I just had my spin shoes cleated so soon I should be spinning myself thin, or less flabby.

That’s great. I was actually pretty careful, too. In spite of the fact that our host is a third generation Italian from Queens who feels that he must prepare three times as much food as anyone can possibly eat – bless his heart. It was all delicious and I took small portions of the banquet and enjoyed every bite!

Glad you’ll be spinning soon. I’ll look forward to hearing about it.

As your online Physical Therapist, i suggest that you start slowly and for less time and build up your endurance, thereby avoiding the ICU. I don’t think they let you blog in there…
